  • Headed to New York!

I’m sitting in Binghamton, NY today, relaxing after a run from West Virginia. Once again I was driving thru familiar territory to the pickup.. going down thru Ohio on Rte 35, thru Gallipolis, and on down by Charleston, WV. As I said in an earlier blog, I’ve traveled this route many times, as we have family in the area. It was nice as always, to see the familiar sights, and familiar roads. I noticed the leaves are starting to change... there is still plenty of green left, but the oranges and yellows of fall are starting to peak thru in the hills of West Virginia.

  • Busy few days!

It’s been a busy few days for me. I’ve ran to Detroit twice, and then over to Big Rapids, MI. Seems business is finally picking up for our industry. Wednesday night, I picked up in a small plant near Columbus, OH. I really don’t understand how the people work there. I worked in a factory many years ago, but conditions were good compared to this place. The product they manufactured involved fibrous material that was run thru machines and cut into various shapes. As I walked in the door, another driver was blinking and shaking his head as he headed out to get air.
  • Labor Day

Well, I hope everyone had a great Labor Day! I ended up deadheading home to Ohio from Memphis, arriving home on Saturday. I had hoped to get a run heading home, but it was not to be. I really hated to deadhead home that far, but I had made plans (and promises to family) to be home for the holiday. To be fair, my company did offer me runs while I was in Memphis, but they were all going South... either Texas, Louisiana, etc... which would have put me too far away to come home. Sometimes you have to weigh the income vs family time. It’s good to have income, but with family coming in, the kids home from college for the weekend and my wife actually off work (!) I felt the better choice was to head home.
  • Walkin in Memphis!

Tonight I delivered in Memphis, just a couple miles from Graceland...Elvis’ home of course. After 33 years, people still throng there, and take tours. They even have one of his planes across the street that you can tour. I’m sure, now with the loss of Michael Jackson, they will do the same thing to Neverland. 30 years from now, people will probably still be paying to see where he lived, how he lived, what he really had in there... just a little peek into his live... even if he’s gone.
  • Days Off!

Went back in service, but no runs so far yesterday or today. Had a few offers, but the ones I wanted, I didn't get. My carrier uses a 'load opportunity' system of dispatch to save time. The load is offered to several trucks at once, rather than one at a time. That way, they don't have to wait and see if 10 trucks don't want it.. and it's an hour later before they find someone. Mean while, the customer is waiting. Now, they offer it to several, and out of those who accept it, the one that has highest wait time AND meets all the requirements, AND can get to it on time.. gets the load. This is good AND bad.
  • Regular Customers

This has been a week of short runs.. and last night was no exception. I had a run to Southern Ohio, to a customer I've been to several times. Also, I've travellled the roads many times in my life, as we have family in the area. It was nice to just relax and drive a familiar route, not worrying about making sure I checked directions, planned my route, etc. It was just a small load once again, but the customer seemed kind of confused as to why it was there! Oh well, we just deliver what we're told.
  • From Quiet Country Roads, to the Bright Lights!

It never ceases to amaze me the differences in surroundings I can see in one day working this job. On the way to the pickup, I was on winding, two lane roads.. surround by overhanging trees. One part of the trip, I drove for about 5 miles within stones throw of the Ohio River, and could see boats cruising by, and people fishing from the banks, and small fishing boats. I picked up near a small town called Friendly, and as I left, the moon was out, and it was just me and the trees for a while! Once again, it was one of those peaceful nights, where I just turned off the radio and enjoyed the ride.
  • A Good Monday!

Since this is the beginning of my blog, I guess I should introduce myself! I’m Dale, and I am the owner and operator of a 2003 Ford E350 Van, which is leased to FedEx Custom Critical. Most of my working years have been spent at indoor jobs, including a stock broker for a short while, customer service for a Fortune 500 company, and 13 years in the restaurant industry. I was tired of someone over my shoulder, and being inside all the time, so it was time to get on the road!
