  • What a day

My ”˜assist’ load ended up being my only load yesterday, which wasn’t quite what I had hoped for. But, it’s just the way it ended up, so I’m glad I took it. It’s better to have a little money than none... plus, it paid well for the time involved. Today I had another short run to a small town in Northwestern Ohio...about 30 miles or so from the state line. It was quite an adventure. The load was nothing extra-ordinary, just some machined parts... but as I got a few miles from the delivery, I ran into a detour. After taking the recommended route, I quickly was glad I was not in a truck! I ended up on what appeared to be an oversized driveway, but was actually labeled a County Road!

Today was another day off around the house. I accepted a run last night, but it’s just an assist for Monday morning. I will be assisting a White Glove unit with an unload. Sometimes a driver will be called in for an escort, or just to help unload something that requires extra help. It should only take a couple hrs of my time, including the drive there and back, and it pays well. I could have held out for a long weekend run, but after 3 days home, I just wanted to have something in the books.

Today I finally got my van back out of the shop. We thought it was only going to take a day, but the mechanic ran into some complications, and the dang thing just didn’t wanna come apart! Funny how nearly 300,000 miles will make bolts seize! Anyway, about $440.00 later, the new water pump, thermostat, and other maintenance is done, and I’m back in service. Kind of stinks that I had to be out of service for 2 days, possibly missing good runs, but as I said before, I’m glad it happened near home. The good thing about having a regular mechanic, who’s also a friend... he didn’t charge me for all the extra time it took him. He quoted the job, and that was it.
  • Cold Days!

It seems that the cold weather is finally coming to Ohio! I had a nice couple days down South, then ran back up thru Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, and into Ohio. Down South I was running with my window down, but the further North I came, the more the window came up LOL. As I got into Ohio, I had to start easing the heat on low. Man the leaves are in full color now, and it's time for some good fall pics. I will be taking more and sharing in the coming few days.
  • A Rainy Night in Georgia!

Wow, what a difference a week makes! A week ago, I was kicked back, my feet buried in the sand, sea gulls soaring over my head, and waves crashing inches from me! The sun was shining, the air was warm...... sigh...

Last night I drove overnight from Ohio to Atlanta. Let me tell ya, the rain came down. In just 4 hrs, they had 2 inches, and were predicting another 2. I'm sure glad I left early, because it took me over an hour to go what should have taken 15 minutes near Atlanta. About 6 am, I hit the beginnings of rush hr traffic.

Tonight I attended the viewing for a recently passed friend of my daughter; Sergeant Titus Reynolds. I’ve never quite seen anything like it. As we turned down the street to the church, hundreds of flags lined the streets. It looked like a parade was going to pass, and indeed, one was. As we reached the church, there was row after row of cars filling the lot. A line stretched out the door, past where an honor guard, bearing flags, stood at attention. As we entered, we realized the line snaked around the inside of the large sanctuary, while small groups of his classmates stood around reflecting on the life of their friend. Many greeted my daughter. We signed the register and got in line to pay our respects. It was there I saw a sight I will never forget; a young wife, with young child... standing by the flag draped coffin of her husband.

Been a slow few days, not much to blog about! After my relaxing day at the beach Monday, I had no runs til today. Today was just a short 40 mile run.. paid ok, but not obviously not much overall. We've been dealing with a lot at home, and I just went and spent a couple days back there. My brother has been fighting cancer for just over 3 years, and it's not looking good.

I’ve been to Chesapeake Bay, The Gulf of Mexico, the Great Lakes, etc... but had never been to the Atlantic Ocean. So, I decided to take a detour on my way to Richmond, and spent the day in Virginia Beach, VA. I went to the First Landing area, and then went down to the actual ocean front. I found a public parking area, 50 ft from the beach! I had a very relaxing day wondering up and down the beach, watching the seagulls, and wading in the ocean. It’s one of those things ya just have to do when you get a chance!

Today is our daughter's 23rd birthday... not quite sure how that happened.LOL! Seems like just yesterday she was running around in diapers! We went to church this morning, then dinner together to celebrate. That's one thing I enjoy about this job...when I really need to be home, I can plan to take the time and go...sure, there's money to be made staying out on the road, but nothing can beat the smiles when Dad makes it home.
  • Surprise run!

Business is still booming, and I’m enjoying it thoroughly! Today I had a ”˜surprise’ run! Better back up I guess. Yesterday, I had a short delivery from Zanesville area over to Dayton in the morning. Went back home to catch a nap, figuring I’d get back out. Later in the day, I accepted another relatively short run from Hillsboro, OH to Andersonville, NC... just about 260 miles... I had been hoping for a longer run, but accepted it, and took off. I didn’t take extra drinks or anything with me, because that short of a run, being in a van, it’s usually cheaper for me just to run back home than to stay out.
