White Glove

Yesterday was a good paying, VERY low mileage day.  The entire morning consisted of driving about 20 miles, and then spending time assisting a White Glove Services truck with the unloading and inside delivery of some large computer equipment.  Sometimes that happens... with a large, heavy load, or if it is a labor intensive load... they will call in van drivers to help with bigger trucks.  When I got there, it was a good thing I went in first. The company had no dock, and the door they wanted the equipment delivered to was kind of hidden.  I went in first, and there was barely room for ME to turn around.  I went out, and directed the truck as he backed down the side of the building, around a corner, and down a ramp to a back door.  Then we had to carefully unload the equipment using his liftgate, 2 Pallet jacks, dock plates, etc... a very time consuming process with fragile stuff.  We then had to uncrate the equipment, take it down another ramp, and re-using the dock plates, take it across different door jams and thresholds, winding it around til we got to the computer server room.  Not as easy as it sounds with something that weighs several hundred pounds, but with 2 of us maneuvering, and several employees calling out clearances (sometimes an inch or less).. we got the servers in place!

Low miles, labor intensive, a bit nerve wracking..but a fun break from normal loads!

I'm reading EO every day to get insight into the cargo van and box truck side of expediting. I attended the siminar in Knoxville,TN and leaned a lot about the industry. Having left a third shift desk position, your real world post of the expediting industry have been very helpful.
Thanks,
Wil
