SUMMIT, Del. — Officials with the Army Corps of Engineers say the Summit Bridge over the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal will be closed for a week in February for an estimated $1 million repair project.
Workers will replace aging anchor pins that support the bridge's main structure.
The 50-year-old bridge on Route 896 carries about 35,000 vehicles each day. Cars and trucks will be detoured to other canal bridges.
The Corps' canal project manager, Tim Rooney, says the bridge is not unsafe but the work is needed.
The project will coincide with a six-month project that begins in October on the St. George's Bridge, which carries U.S. Route 13 traffic over the canal. Workers will be repairing cracked and corroded bearings and piers.
