Illinois police target I-55; ‘Click it or Ticket’ in full force

May 29, 2007 - 11:33:00 AM | By Reed Black, staff writer - Land Line

Lots of states are planning big law enforcement campaigns during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

This year, the first big weekend of the summer falls during the annual “Click it or Ticket” campaign, which continues until June, and some state officials are stepping up to drive the point home.

Illinois officials announced plans to get an early start by placing troopers at 10 mile intervals all along Interstate-55 on Friday, May 25.

The Springfield Journal-Register reported the clampdown will start at noon and end at midnight, with special attention to speed, seat belt use and compliance with the move over law that protects emergency vehicles on the shoulders.

Federal officials said the focus of Click it or Ticket this year is on nighttime seat belt use because research shows that while we’re three times more likely to be killed in an accident at night, for some reason fewer people wear seat belts after dark.
