Detroit metro tops Speed Trap Cities list

May 30, 2007 - 1:04:00 PM | By Steven Mackay - eTrucker

Detroit tops a list of the top 10 speed trap cities in the United States, as compiled by the National Motorists Association.

The list, according to the organization, was compiled just as the summer travel season kicks off. It was created from the NMA’s SpeedTrap Exchange, a website devoted to identifying the location of speed traps.

Cities were ranked by the number of speed traps posted on the website by the public. No exact figures were available as the number of speed traps within a city regularly fluctuates according to law enforcement needs, according to a NMA spokesman.

The top 10 cities are:

1. Detroit metro area
2. Colorado Springs, Colo.
3. Houston
4. Orlando, Fla.
5. Nashville, Tenn.
6. Ann Arbor, Mich.
7. Albuquerque, N.M.
8. Washington, D.C.
9. Denver
10. Virginia Beach, Va.

NMA notes that arbitrarily low speed limits combined with heavy enforcement means there are many other areas in which drivers should be alert to avoid traffic citations.
