Portable generators

Do any of you know if it is legal to carry a portable generator in the side box on an expediter truck?

I have been carrying one for a while, had the box open with DOT standing there and the only comments I ever got were;

"Honda? Nice generator"

and

"you know that you are required to carry gas in a DOT certified container, you know the one with one of them loops near the spout?"
