While reading a fuel-economy thread, the thought came to mind that an EO article entitled "Basic Math for Expediters" would be helpful to a number of readers. I don't write for EO any more but I thought I'd share the idea just the same.

What basic math should all expediters be able to do? A few math tasks come to mind that I list below. What others are important?

BASICS

1. Calculate miles per gallon.

2. Calculate your pay per mile.

3. Calculate total monthly expenses.

4. Calculate total monthly revenue.

5. Calculate monthly net revenue.

6. Calculate total miles driven in a month or other time period.

7. Calculate time required to complete a run.

8. Calculate the annual percentage change (increase or decrease) of an expense item (tires, fuel, tolls, etc.).

9. Calculate your cost per day of sitting (or taking time off).

ADVANCED

1. Calculate the amount your truck depreciation contributes to your operating costs per mile.

2. Calculate your cost per mile for running in New York (or any other state).

3. Calculate the difference in fuel tax and highway use tax costs between two states.

4. Calculate the true value of a tax-deductible item that you purchase.
