DOT ROAD CHECK & CARGO VANS

I got stopped a while ago in Alabama by a motor carrier enforcement officer who thought I should have a log book. At one time even vans were required to keep a log in Alabama. He did a level II inspection, in which everything was OK, but I still got written up for no log book. My safety director...

    ::: FL Sprinter :::

The true capacity of a one ton van is the Gvwr minus it's unloaded weight. My GMC 3500 has a GVWR of 9500 lbs, it's empty weight is 6020, so the actual maximum weight I can carry is 3480 lbs. Thats one ton plus 1480 lbs, so the name "one ton van" really isn't an accurate measure of it's...

    cargo van OTR drivers

I use a folding cot with a 3 1/2" foam matress I got at Cabellas.I have a good sleeping bag and I tucked an electric throw inside and run it off an inverter with a couple of deep cycle marine batteries. Works great, you stay warm as toast. In the summer, just an small 12 volt electric fan is ok...

    Canada PARS vs FAST

Thanks for the replys, I didn't think they would do away with the PARS system since not every shipper is going to go with FAST. The PARS system works fine, as long as the broker enters the info into the system, which, i'm sure will be the same with FAST. Thanks, Captain

    Canada PARS vs FAST

Is the PARS system still going to be around or is being replaced entirely by the FAST system? I was told by a carrier that Canada was "moving away from the PARS system" but I'm having a hard time believing that would happen any time soon. Anyone else heard that PARS was being discontinued...

    Deer Whistles, Do They Work?

At first I thought these whistles really did work, but now I'm not so sure. Most of the time as I approached deer, they would either stop, or move away from the edge of the road. Last December, one of them just stopped in front of me right in the middle of the lane. This was in Ohio on SR67 just...

    Pickup vs Cargo Van

I have a GMC extended cargo van, and I just took a fold-up cot that I bought at Cabelas and use bungee cords to hold it up against the side of the truck above the wheel well. I cut off the center legs about an inch from the bedframe and put a sleeve on each end of them so I can slip them on and...

    rest stop scam

Just want to warn you guys, the scam artists are active along I-75 in Kentucky. Watch for four men driving a small grey or silver car, two in their mid 50's and two in their mid thirties. They park in the truck parking area of the rest stops and according to drivers one of the younger men...

Cargo Van vs. Local Company Driver

I use one of those old Coleman catalytic heaters that I've had for years, it burns the liquid camp fuel. It will raise the temperature in the van 25 or 30 degrees higher than what is is outside and you have to open the windows a little to let in some fresh air. I don't think they make those...

Cargo Van vs. Local Company Driver

Hi Winemaker, Chicago area would be a good place to get loads, I always get loads when I deliver to that area. I run a van out of the Detroit area, which is another hub area. This year has not been real busy for me, I'm down about 20% from what I did last year. Last year I ran 98,000 miles and...

    Freight Volume

Things have been up and down for me since the first of the year, overall it's probably down 25% from last year at this time. I have a "B" unit and i'm averaging about $700-800 gross. At the end of year I grossed $50500 and took off about 6 weeks vacation time. Captain

EXPEDITING 2002 A YEAR IN REVIEW

2002 was a little better for me than 2001. 3rd quarter was the best and 4th was the worst, but overall I took a total of six weeks vacation (last year I took three weeks off), and right now I'm about twenty five hundred bucks ahead of last year. Captain

    Canada Canada

One thing to remember if they try to scan your documents at the primary booth and it doesn't scan...they will tell you to go directly to the offsite inspection station. Be SURE when you get to the station you go to customs FIRST, before you see the broker. They will scan it again and if it fails...

    NEW AT THE GAME

You can always find motel rooms at discount rates, just stop at a rest area and you'll find discount books with all kinds of coupons.Rates are dirt cheap during the off season, usually from mid fall to early spring. I have a folding cot and a good sleeping bag in my van, and most of the time...

    Cargo Vans and CDL

Most companies want a CDL, class C or above with a haz-mat endorsement. There are some companies that will let you get by with a chauffeurs license, you'd have to call around and find out. A CDL isn't that hard to get, just stop by your secretary of states office and they will give you a manual...
