I watched a show about ships featuring a Danish warship with twin 20 cylinder engines. Each cylinder is independent. If there's a breakdown, unlike most engines that are down until repaired, they shut down that one cylinder. They can remove it if need be and once repaired or replaced put it back online. Instead of losing 100% of that engine output they only lose 5%.
