The Trump Card...

Yea we have no illegal immigrant problem at all. Let's just keep ignoring it. Like him or not he has forced others to talk about a serious problem that's only getting bigger.

We do have a problem with illegal immigrants - but like poverty, it's a tough one, with no solutions that aren't almost as bad as the original problem. A wall is a ludicrous idea - but we do need to create policies that protect US citizens. We can't afford to provide for the whole world. We also need to enforce them - which Trump's own contractors aren't doing, why isn't he talking about that?

He's probably not talking about it because it was one subcontractor on one job and there hasn't been a whisper from WaPo or anyone else about any other cases.

Not sure why you would think a wall is "ludicrous". Seems to be a pretty effective solution in other countries. It isn't going to keep every single one out, but it is a much better solution to anything I have heard so far. Oh, and I am not buying the Trump line that Mexico is going to pay for it. But, is a cheaper alternative to paying for many through there life time.
Keep in mind, a large portion of it is already there.

Come on, Dave....There isn't one example where a wall was successful in keeping people out.... Berlin Wall was to keep people in, so that doesn't count.

If it stops or slows the wave of people in or out, then that is better than what we currently have. As mentioned, you aren't going to stop them all, but you will slow the tide.

It's only ludicrous to people who are against it.

True. It is the best option because as a country, we don't have the political will to do anything else. This at least addresses it to some degree.

Without security the walls cannot stop most people. Imagine 2000 miles of border patrols

We already have 2000 miles of border patrols. A wall will assist them in their work. It's not a build a wall and stop patrolling type of thing.

The wall may help, but the military presence along the border has much more to do with it.

From the Washington Times.....
According to Haaretz, a 2006 report by the Shin Beit concluded that "[t]he fence does make it harder for them [terrorists]" but that attacks in 2005 decreased due to increased pursuing of Palestinian militants by the Israeli army and intelligence organizations, Hamas's increased political activity, and a truce among Palestinian militant groups in the Palestinian Territories. Haaretz reported, "[t]he security fence is no longer mentioned as the major factor in preventing suicide bombings, mainly because the terrorists have found ways to bypass it."[47] Former Israeli Secretary of Defence Moshe Arens says that the reduction in Palestinian violence is largely due to the IDF's entry into the West Bank in 2002.[48].

I do not think this country has the will or political balls to station active Army troops along the entire border like Israel has.

We would need to have patrol covering every inch of the wall every moment to make it work. We don't even have a hundred miles of border patrols right now

I think you have to have a combination of the wall, technology, and border patrol to make it work. Military would work even in a small capacity that moves around, but I do agree, not sure we have the political will to do that.

That just isn't true, with technology you can place agents at intervals to respond. Areas that they have built walls or and increased agents have seen drops in numbers. It's forced people to trek further over tougher terrain to cross. Even if it only reduced crossings by 20% it would be worth every penny imho.

.
So the wall has helped them. What's the problem? Build the wall where it is necessary and do all the other enforcements. Done and done.

Trump is talking about a 1,000 miles of wall. He has mentioned other enforcements as well like added border agents, technology, drones(surveillance) etc.

The problem is, the U.S. will not man the wall.

It is having armed troops, and the will to use force that will stem the tide of illegals, not a wall.

The agents are already armed. Just add more agents. They won't have to use deadly force unless in extreme circumstances when their life is in danger.
