Re: 8.3 cummins white smoking and black when driving
Well Piper may correct me on this one.
It could be an injector leaking but it is more likely a head gasket leaking. Is it running rough on idle or under a load?
I would first start with checking your oil to see if these is water in it. Then a smell test, if the white smells like radiator fluid. I would drain the fuel filters a bit to see if you have water in them - assuming you have two - but at least the one after the lift pump.
I just got another quote for 6 injectors at $155 each, but that doesn't include labor to R&R them.Greg

Depending on the year of the truck the newer (2005) and newer injectors can run closer to $300 each. Try changing the fuel filters, be sure to use good filters and dump some 911 into the fuel tanks ( 1/2 gallon to 200 gallons of fuel). Then take it out for a good 50 to 60 miles of open highway. See if that'll clean out the injectors, this has worked for us before and might save you a lot of money and downtime.

Wash the cylinder?
If it is a leaky injector, then yea you would wash the oil off the walls and may end up with fuel in the oil. It is a problem with the head gasket, you will see a drop in your coolant level, may not see anything in the oil (but always check that).
Thanks Mcarriers for that, I forgot it is winter.
Where and when did you fuel up last?
Did you use any additive?
If you have a davco filter/heater, I would add the 911 into the filter, draining some of the fuel off into a bucket.Greg

MCarriers has the best answer. Especially since it is cold. Change the filters and treat the fuel. If you bought fuel that has a high level of bio (namely IN & IL) then it will take a little more anti-gel. If it still idles rough (almost a miss) then it is likely a injector. If you are adding anti-freeze that could be an issue Greg mentioned, or if it seems your oil is rising (deisel mixing with oil) or excess is coming out of the blow by tube then it is again a bad injector, seal, or rings. A laptop hookup will answer most in a few minutes.

You have to find or go to someone that has the Cummins software. You need a set up that can do a cut out.
A bad injector won't throw any codes.fleet owner

Re: 8.3 cummins white smoking and black when driving
I did a quick internet search and found rebuilt pumps for $1295. However in my opinion the pump being bad is questionable, since you have said it is not throwing codes. take to an independent diesel injection service place get them to look at it.

Re: 8.3 cummins white smoking and black when driving
Keep in mind I'm new at this and don't know what I'm talking about...but I did a Google search for "cummins injector pump 8.3" and came up with a bunch of entries for the 5.9 and did find this shop for the 8.3:
Oregon Fuel Injection has the diesel fuel injection pump, injector or turbo for your Cummins Diesel engine.
there were a few for $1295
