New Ford Diesels

If you are thinking about getting a Ford Cargo Van I would seriously go with a gasser. this week working in the service department at a car dealership I've seen more Ford vans and trucks with the diesel engines come in than anything else. This is at a dealership that sales and services Ford,Chrysler, and Toyota. One had an injector literally explode. The tech pulled it out in pieces. Just thought I'd offer up some insight. The service manager and techs said the Ford diesels aren't worth a wooden nickel. So it's not just my opinion.

Re: New Ford Diesels

guessing that injector was from a 6.0? the new engine is a 6.4.

I have a 1999 F 250 with 283,000 miles and a 2002 E 350 Cargo Van with 221,000 and NEVER had a problem with either one. The E 350 get 23 MPG @ 62 MPH and the F 250 gets 18 MPG out here in the country.

Newer models use low sulpher diesel only if you use any thing other then that you will have a problem with it.iam assuming most people are still pumping cheaper diesel (ha ha ha thats a joke no such thing as cheap diesel any more but i mean cheaper then lowsulpher diesel).with my 2008 freighliner i cant use any thing other then low sulphur fuel or i will run into problems with it.

Re: New Ford Diesels

Ford (International really) got a few more things right with the 6.4 vs. the 6.0 but the new 6.4 is still not a terribly reliable engine and it is very expensive to fix out of warranty. BTW using low sulfur instead of ultra low sulfur will not hurt the injectors it hurts the DPF and will cause your oil to deplete faster.

I have an 04 super-duty (for sell) 6.0 at home
210K .
had an EGR valve go bad on me .
rather then that never had any problems with the power-plant.
cannot match the cummins/Dodge for fuel millage.
as its only gets 11 mpg loaded
and 16 mpg empty .

Re: New Ford Diesels

If it was a 2008 E-Series van it was a 6.0L. If it was a 2008 F-Series truck it was a 6.4L.
The 6.4L won't fit in an E-Series so they are using their left over 6.0's in the vans. So I would stick with a gasser.

Re: New Ford Diesels

It was the 6.4 that the injector exploded on. Then we've also had quite a few E series vans in with several problems. I was just throwing the info out there in case someone was shopping. A salesman will tell you what you want to hear, but when a service manager says you are going to have problems it's something I would trust.

Re: New Ford Diesels

In my opinion, they should have kept the Powerstroke. We regularly towed 10k grain and anhydrous trailors out of muddy fields with a F350 4x4 , and had 2 E350 box vans with that engine. Reliable Beasts! But Hey, you know the modern automaker credo. . . . "If it ain't broke, fix it anyway! give those $60 an hr techs more biz! " LOL.

Re: New Ford Diesels

I heard that part of the problem was that Ford pressured IH to rush the new engines into production. That sure doesn't make sense when you have something as popular as the 7.3 doing a great job. Mine is still going strong and it looks like it will outlive the body of the van.
