Actually, the weight of your truck, as it crosses the scale when entering the toll booth, determines toll class on the OHTP. The next time you're on the 'Pike, look at the back of the ticket, it is imprinted with the toll class. My truck ('99 International 9200, 10 wheeler), without freight, is a Class3 when it's low on fuel and Class4 with tanks full.

Re: single screw or double

Point taken. Still, the main point remains. In Ohio, tolls are calculated by weight and not by the number of axles on the ground.

Re: single screw or double

No way will we spec a twin screw truck due to the rolling resistance of the extra axle. With fuel prices constantly going up and up we will continue to run a single axle and we will have a lift axle. We put shock absorbers on our lift axle and this made all the difference in the world with the ride.

With the SS the ride is also greatly improved. We have run our SS on ice and had no problems and we also did not get stuck this past year. We have only been stuck running duals. The chains are heavy but you can manage them and we have no worries about installing the chains. We also carry cable chains which will be easier to install.

We run an air pressure system with our SS and do not worry about getting stuck along side of the road. How often have you ruined a tire going down the road? It can happen and it can happen in many situations but with the savings you get running the SS you can afford a tow truck.

Re: single screw or double

Did this original poster not state I AM NEW? Phils idea is right on FOR SOMEONE MAKING THREE TO FOUR TIMES THE AMOUNT of most Expediters in otherwords HE CAN AFFORD the extra fuel useage at any $. (this is meant as a compliment by the way) Know one knows this business better than these two) now getting to where and how they are at? A committment I am not willing to make and are 98% of the rest of us, no home, life in a truck? Not for me or anyone else I assiciate with here or elsewhere. They make it work and work well. Very few would or could be that dedicated to success, and I am success driven am I not?

This is guy is new and until he knows the business and how to generate the most income it is gona be to his financial advantage to keep every cost at low as possible is it not?

Larry to think that this guy is gona know what you are exploring I think is not good advice to HIM. To someone who knows the business and how to find freight maybee.

Have we failed to remember that fuel is $5.00 a gallon in some places? That general Expedited freight generates about $1.25 +fsc? There is a large learning curve, and to weave thru it is not good advice to advise WATCH YOUR OVERHEAD and investage what tools are and will improve your bottom line the best. Elementary School, Middle School, High School. Just like school there are steps to learning this business the difference though is keeping enough or as much $ as possible until the education is in place to make the next step.
