I'm looking to start with a new cargo van with my partner. As a new business, do I need to file an SS-4 with the Feds to treat things as a business (use the tax ID number to open a checking account, etc)? I know I can form an LLC, but what can I do for the minimum amount of hassle?

Filing SS-4 NO! it is not necessary to file for an EIN, Employer Identification Number. Unless you definitely plan on setting up the LLC, "S" Corp, or Standard Corp. You, setup your checking account as a DBA meaning Name: "Doing Business AS" using your social Security Number. This is the least hassle that you would be looking for right now.
