Questions for Frank

Frank,

Do you take questions from a newbi? Let's take it from the top...I am under lease to a company, but have yet to leave the driveway with the truck. (Waiting on my IRP plate)

My question is this...I have over 700 miles invested on my car, doing the legwork involved in leasing on. I have the odometer readings, and dates, written down. Along with the receipts involved.

If I keep a written record of the mileage on my personal car, are the miles used for business purposes tax deductable? Surely the receipts are?

Thanks for your time in reading this, and I'm sure I'll have a lot more silly questions along the way. While expediting makes money, the bottom line has to be "How much can I keep?"

RE: Questions for Frank

Hi Toes,

Yes, the mileage for you to find a new job is deductiable to you as a mileage deduction. The rate is $.36 per mile as long as you have records.
Where is the IRP plate coming From, I hope its not Okla. and you live in another state, you will have problems, What size unit do you have. and what company have you signed on with, if its Fedex or Tri-State, you will have a problem with the Okla apportioned plate. All persons who do not have an actual place of residence in Oklahoma, are not allowed to use Okla for there IRP plates. you must have an electric bill or lease agreement from that residence.
So Be careful

Frank,

Thanks for the quick reply. I was pretty sure that work-related mileage applied to pre-employment.

Yes, my IRP plate is an Ohio tag, and Ohio residence. It was just a matter of the person not having enough time Monday to process the paperwork. So Wenesday I'll make another 200 mile round trip. Lotta trouble for a plate. But when I leave the yard, I mean to be heading for a load. Legal, no questions asked. (Best way)

I bought my neighbors '99 FL 70. Leased it on to the same company, Nations, out of North Carolina. Nice clean one-owner, non-smoker unit. 140,000 miles, 24-foot box w/ barn doors. 66 inch highrise sleeper. Came fully equipped... Mircowave, tv/vcr, fridge, c.b. bars, straps. Severice records. Like I say, clean piece and worth the 15 grand. Had to think about it though.

It does have that seven speed Spicer pushing a small kitty. New tranny just installed. Comes with a one year warrenty on new clutch & transmission. (I've got the receipts) He put new steering tires on 5000 miles ago.

So I don't really think I'm hurt bad on the truck. But time will tell.

Rear tires starting to show some light age-cracks, so I'll toss four new ones on Thursday. Still good tread...but a little older than I want. Tire shop offered me four new Generals at $600.00 and my tires. Sound like a fair deal to me.

I'll have 6 new tires, new clutch, new trans. It ought to hold together for a year or two anyway.

Frank, I'm new to expediting. But looks to me like the main concern is about money. What job isn't? Gross is one thing. What I get to keep is another.

That has to be the bottom line. The amount of money I bring home, and keep. I fully intend to write off everything I can in trucking. And then look for a way to write off the rest of it.
