Classification for P/U w Trailer?
Frank, everone;
I have been looking into the use of a one ton p/u w 30 something foot flatbed trailer for use in 'hotshot service' or 'express frieght'.
does this combination fit in the B class or am I looking at a can of worms? i am trying to keep below the heavy use tax if at all possible.
thanks
About logs- if any of you run the eleven western states, carry a logbook. wyoming and the other states out here do check for them.

RE: Classification for P/U w Trailer?
Hi Streetsweeper,
your question about a P/U with Duallies I hope, is what your thinking about would come under a "B" Unit, Basically yes as for the P/U itself, Under 10,000 gvw, but once you add the trailer, it would probably be under the 33,000 gvw weight class depending on the weight of the trailer, and the load that you would haul, You would still have to scale every load, no matter what, and go into scale houses, Since you will be commerical, you would probably have to log also. but that is up to the company that you lease on to, or if you get your own authority, yes definitely you would have to scale and log, and must stay under the gvw of combination vehicles according to the DOT rulings.
You would not have to pay the Heavy Veh use tax, or form 2290 for your state and federal govt, but you willprobably have to pay for the IFTA fuel tax sticker. and pay fuel tax to states, but that depends on the company also
Try to lease on to a company that hauls hot shot, there are not that many out there, RV's, customs Vans, etc In Indiana, there is one in Alabama, otherwise go for flatbed freight, you are going to have ot tarp, get sides, and and whatever items a normal flatbed has,

RE: Classification for P/U w Trailer?
Thank you Frank. Yes with duallies, lol. I'm crazy but not that crazy! The trailer will be dual tandems so it should be legal all the way, again thank you for the advice.

RE: Classification for P/U w Trailer?
Ricky,
I am not sure what exactly that you are looking for, in reference to hot shot , do you want to transport cars, trucks, or just general freight, cars/ trucks normally no tarps or sides are required, only problem is any damage to them you are responsible for, thrown rocks, etc that hits the vehicles or RV's, Other is General Freight, which tarping will probably be required. As far as logging there is definitely a possibility that you will have to log, depends on the company that you decide to lease to. plus what your GVW will be loaded.
But if you look on the net under trucking/alabama, you will find 219 trucking co'S, 34 auto transporters aND 24 TRUCK TRANSPORTERS, TRY CALLING EACH OF THEM AND SEE WHAT THEY OFFER, IT REALLY DOESNT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE WHERE THE COMPANY IS LOCATED, OR DOES IT MATTER, IF YOUR PLANNING ON BEING HOME MORE THAT ONCE IN 2 WEEKS DONT EVEN THINK OF DOING IT. BECAUSE YOU REALLY HAVE TO STAY OUT ABOUT 10-14 DAYS, IN ORDER TO TRY AND GET SOMETHING GOING TOWARD THE HOUSE. tHAT IS UP TO YOU.

RE: Classification for P/U w Trailer?
Frank, thanks for the information. I was looking for a company that haul general freight using a 40' flatbed gooseneck trailer pulling it with a dually pickup. I have tried two search engine tring to find the information that you have mention but have had no luck finding it. Maybe you could be so nice, tell me which search engine you use and the subject you type it to find it.
Thanks, Ricky:-)

RE: Classification for P/U w Trailer?
I think with the trailer it would fall within the Class "D" Truck and would have to log, it would come under the 33000 gvw loaded but make sure,
Frank

RE: Classification for P/U w Trailer?
Some info may help. I don't Hot Shot, just deliver RVs, pony, un/covered utility, and stacks of about anything that can be stacked. If you lease in Indiana, IDOT requires loaded PUs to log, stop at POEs and cross all open scales. Even though the law reads "while under dispatch control", since it's cheaper to pay the fine than to take it to court and fight it, they will continue to require this until somebody bites the bullet and gets it decided in court. It's a pain, but generates good revenue for Indiana. I for one don't care to contribute so I log everything, even potty breaks.

RE: Classification for P/U w Trailer?
HI OTRPU,
GOOD LOOKING TRUCK!
AS FAR AS LOGGING IS CONCERNED YOU DEFINITELY DO NOT HAVE TO LOG ALL POTTY STOPS, ONLY THE ONES THAT TAKE OVER 10-15 MIN. REMEMBER THE DOT AND ALL POLICE KNOW ITS A COMIC BOOK, BUT AS LONG AS YOU KEEP IT UP TO DATE AND IS LEGIABLE AND KEEP YOURSELF LEGAL,YOUR FINE,
YES YOU HAVE TO GO INTO ALL SCALES NO MATTER WHAT, UNLES YOU DO NOT HAVE THE TRAILER ATTACHED. IT WOULD DEPEND ON WHAT THE GVW IS WHEN LOADED. YOUR BASICALLY UNDER 26,000 LBS WHICH REALLY DOES NOT REQUIRE YOU TO SCALE. WHAT IS YOUR COMPLETE EMPTY WEIGHT WITH TRAILER.
iN THE NEAR FUTURE THE LOGGING WILL BE REQUIRED NATION WIDE FOR ALL HOTSHOT, CARGO VANS, PICKUPS WHO CARRY CARGO FOR A LIVING.
RIGHT NOW, IN,FOR WHAT YOUR DOING, AL,AZ,CA,OR,WY,CO,MS,KY,PLUS A FEW OTHERS REQUIRE IT, LOGGING AND SCALE.
