War by appointment
Obama has set a time frame of eighteen months for the conflict in Afghanistan. Not really sure what it means or how it works. Can you envision Obama holding a stopwatch? The concept seems more fitting for a sporting event.
This war in Afghanistan confuses me. Eight years? I can't even define what our war aims are presently. How will we know when victory in Afghanistan is achieved? Are we going to use our troops as police against the enemy? The rules of engagement preclude any real battlefield victory from happening. So long as the jihadists are allowed to take safe haven in PockyStonn, the status quo holds firm. It's as though this war is being run from the Justice Department.
Timid leadership from Bush, and now Obama, are costing many US troops their limbs and lives.

Re: War by appointment
The LAST major war we were involved in lasted over 40 years. Some called the the "Cold War" we called it something else but I won't go into that again. THIS one started during Jimmy Carter's term and most likely will go on for AGES. AT LEAST as long as the Cold War.
We are partly to blame for the current mess in Afghanistan. We poured in tons of money to help the Afghan's defeat Soviet Russia and then, after they did, we did NOTHING to help them re-build. That allowed for a very LARGE power vacuum in a poor country with little hope in site. That was Bush I's stupid move.
Now we have a country that is a total wreck, no real government in control and Pakistan right next door with nukes.
We have NO choice but to insure that the Taliban does NOT re-take that country. WE, the United States, would likely soon be TOAST if they do.
This is already nearly a global conflict and will soon be one. WE must treat it as such. Fight it for REAL, that means NO stupid Obama R.O.E's or we will lose.
