Proof 11 hour driving rule improves safety
The study by VTTI had the following result
A statistically significant difference in
critical incident relative frequencies
between the 1st driving-hour and all other
driving-hours
■ However, there was generally no statistical
difference between the 2nd through 11th
driving-hour .
The hour with the most frequency of accidents is the first hour . Joan Claybrook likes to rant about driving consecutive 11 hour days .
Therefore if a driver's job requires driving 55 hours a week , under the 11 hour rule the work can be accomplished in 5 days . Under the 10 hour rule an additional day will be required using 20% more dangerous first hours per week .

Yes the first hour or two are your most important but the fact remains that everyone is different, every situation is different and these rules are written with one group in mind - the OTR company team driver.
But nevertheless, the FMCSA ignored the countless years of sleep deprivation studies by the military and how the FAA made their decision for Pilots.
If they were serious about safety, training would be at the top of their list of things to change.Greg

Link to study Slide 1 .
Anyone that doesn't contact their representatives and DOT officials will have no right to cry when more changes are made . The Teamsters and Public Citizen have already wasted far too much time of the courts and FMCSA on this keeping them from spending time on truly important issues .

Re: Proof 11 hour driving rule improves safety
When you take in account the 14 hour work rule, you can burn up at least two hours per driver with pre/post trips, P/D and fuel/rest stops so to me it is obvious that it is intended for teams. Most teamster (union) delivery trucks have the 150 mile rule so it seems that the companies with teams in the OTR trucks benefit the most by keeping the trucks moving.
Regardless, this industry is fractured and we can't/won't/refuse to have a voice as in a collective to effect any change in this era of change.Greg

Rumor has it they want cameras installed in cabs that would
record the driver area activated when the truck moves.
Logs better match the movie.......get the popcorn

well the camera thing is like the sleep apnea thing, it is a money maker for those who sell and install the equipment.
The same goes for the BS that logging software on laptops can not be used as EOBR when they can be without difficult changes to the software and can follow the regs. The EOBR manufactures are the ones pushing the technology and spin it so they are the only game in town.Greg
