North Korea declares war on U.S.
It's obvious tea parties, nice talking, conceding and sanctions are ineffective with North Korea. It's a shame the citizens will have to pay the price for their lunatic dictator but it's coming to that point. Here's their latest act of war against the U.S.

The story fails to say what they were convicted on. But no matter I am sure that obummer will give in to their demands once they are laid out.

If they were convicted of being spies, I think N Korea would've said so. I'd bet they were taking environmental photos of places not so environmental... or interviewing someone they shouldn't have. Who knows? They could've been guilty of being S Korean.

Re: North Korea declares war on U.S.
They were convicted of "hostility toward the Korean people" and of entering the country illegally. The two women were reporting about the trafficking of North Korean women, and were arrested on the China-North Korean border just inside North Korea. They either wandered across the border by accident or on purpose.
I'm not sure that I'd classify arresting and convicting a couple of illegal aliens for being illegal aliens an act of war, though. Giving them the maximum sentence was a political move, to be sure. We took a hard line stance with them, now they're retaliating, and so it goes. But both will most likely be released due to diplomatic efforts before too long.

Thats what I read too Turtle, that they are just being used as a bargaining chip and will be released. I guess they were tried in the highest court so no chance of an appeal

Re: North Korea declares war on U.S.
I would also question if they were really inside North Korea. That bunch over there is NOT known for thier honesty. It would NOT surpise me if they "snatched" them from just outside thier border and claimed otherwise. The North Koreans cannot be trusted.

Re: North Korea declares war on U.S.
Leo, I am surprised at you... doesn't entering a country illegally mean the same thing in North Korea as it does here?
These two are journalist, they were there for a specific reason and if it would have been something that happened with the knowledge of the Chinese, there would have been more said. Our state department and Obama's administration is bending over backwards on this issue because of they are journalist and connected to ALGORE. I think they can rot there, I am not sympathetic of any journalist who puts themselves in harms way and is treated better then a common citizen.Greg

Re: North Korea declares war on U.S.
I agree with you Greg, IF, they were really in N. Korean territory. It would NOT surprise me to learn that they were NOT!! Cross border kidnappings are not uncommon. They have been standard practice in that region since the Korean War ended. That country is scum and we really do need to deal with these thugs soon. 50+ years of trying to live with them is just too long. Thier colors are NOT going to change. They have had enough time.

Re: North Korea declares war on U.S.
I don't know that they entered illegally and wouldn't trust the north Koreans any farther than I could throw them. If they did indeed enter illegally then they need to be deported post haste. Absent any other criminal activity that's all they deserve. Yes, it's politics and posturing on their parts. We shouldn't tolerate it for an instant. Then again, we should have eliminated this problem years ago.

Re: North Korea declares war on U.S.
That was the first time that we did NOT fight to win. We drew lines in the sand. We could not cross that magic line and our enemies could. Stupid way to fight a war. Still doing it to this day. We have not learned. That is what happens when you do not teach history as it really happened.

Re: North Korea declares war on U.S.
Leo,
1 - I don't think China tolerates invasions from anyone, I think it was last year that some Russians were crossing over into china and china picked them up very quickly.
2 - the media is silent on a lot of the fact surrounding these two and what they were actually doing.
3 - they have been treated rather well in comparison to the south koreans who go into the north to help their realitives out, most of those don't come back.
4 - the north could have just shot them and left them to rot but took steps to make sure they were treated well
5 - we will not get the truth from either the 'journalist' or north korea, the former will make money off of it to make some social comment and the latter will get some diplomatic attention.Greg
