    Stay out of religion

Some dumba** representative has introduces the Bible Bill, making 2009 the year of the bible. Sorry you religious types, but that is endorsement of a religion by the government - bad thing.

This is the problem with the republican party, they need to step away from the religious aspect of the party and re-embrace the fundamentals that the people, all the people value.

Actually it's not. Most people don't understand the Constitution and that's what causes so much trouble. It says the government will not establish "A" religion. That was based primarily on not wanting a "Church of England" system to become a "Church of the USA" system. If the year of Catholicism or Mormonism or Methodism were suggested that would be a violation and wrong. The Bible is not "A" religion. Public prayer is not "A" religion. Displaying the ten commandments on a courhouse wall is not "A" religion. This bill will not suit some people but there is nothing wrong with it. It is not a bad thing. It in no way violates the Constitution.

    Re: Stay out of religion

The Supreme Court screwed the pooch on that one when they said "no establish of religion" meant, essentially, no acknowledgment of religion and a complete lack of religion. Like you said, it was put in there to prevent the establishment of a State Religion, not to disavow any and all religions. As a result, the Ten Commandments on a courthouse wall is, in fact, a case of the State sponsoring a particular religion (even though to anyone with any sense at all it clearly is not).

I don't have a problem with 2009 being "The Year of the Bible" as long as some other book gets picked for 2010. Like, oh, I dunno, maybe make it "The Year of the Grapes of Wrath", or "The Year of Green Eggs and Ham", or in keeping with this sudden food metaphor, "The Year of Fried Green Tomatoes".

    Re: Stay out of religion

What about the Muslim Charter schools in Minnisota, paid for with tax dollars? There are many schools in Michigan that in the past have not allowed the Bible in the library but did allow the Koran. Seems fair to me!!

Layout, out of curiousity. i did both a Google and Ask search to ascertain if Michigan had, indeed, allowed the Quaran(sp) to be placed in schools, with negative results. What were your sources for that statement?

Friends and reletive in SE Michigan schools. It was also featured on WJR about a year ago, I THINK, on the Paul W. Smith show but I could be mistaken on that.

From what I understand the Koran (SP?) is only in the library for "literary purposes". I cannot confirm this other then what I stated above but will keep looking. The Mulism Charter school thing is much easier to find info on.

Thumbs up Re: Stay out of religion

Layout, as you have probably figured out, I lean toward the left in my politics, but I do enjoy reading what the right has to say about the issues.

When I question what you, or others, post, it is not an attack. It is my attempt to make sure you do your homework, before posting.

    Re: Stay out of religion

Hey, no problem!! I often take the word of people I trust without checking. Not always the best idea but I seldom go wrong with most of them.

Where do you get the idea I am on the so-called "Right"?
I learned "Right and Left" the old fashioned way. Monarchy on the Far left and Anarchy on the Far right with Republic in the center.

I don't like the ideas of the "Left" because they demeen the human spirit. They deny the "Joy" of the "Quest". I like the "Thrill of victory and the agany of defeat". The more you do for someone the less they do for themselfs. I believe that government saps the will and takes away the "Dream" by providing for rather than staying out of the way. There is no greater joy or confidence builder than tackling something difficult and winning. There is better way to destroy the human spirit by taking away the challenge. The harder the life the greater the rewards. I do NOT speak of monitary rewards, they are NOT important. I speak of the reward of the spirit. The knowlege you gain.

The FIRST REALLY hard life lesson that hit me was when I got laid off from a job on the same day that we found out that my wife was expecting my first son. I did NOT go lookng for handouts. I hunted and fished for our food. I worked odd jobs to cover the rent, paid my OWN health insurance and car payments.

We not only survived, we prospered. Not monitarily but spiritually. I KNOW that I can do what it takes. That gives me GREAT POWER. Had the government "did" for me I would not have that power, knowlege or confidence. I would be weak and dis-abled.

point one: "Catholicism or Mormonism or Methodism " are all part of the Christian church

though per sa those are not necessarily crating a government backed religion in the broader scope of things it is. when a quarter of your population (and getting larger every day) are not Christan it is forcing a belief system on them. so in spirit of no state religion it is creating a state religion, just because you attempt to remove allot of the dogma that separates the different facets of a belief system does not mean that it is not a state sponsored religion.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; (first half of the first amendment) that sound like it means the government is suppose to be totally neutral in this area if this was not the case we would be a theocracy instead of a republic.

The Bible is for the most part, the laws for two different but related religions that have many, many facets. therefore it's use in any government ran operation is wrong. a few minutes of silence for what ever before school starts is a good thing, lets a person pray or collect there thoughts what ever. open prayer or Bible study? not a good thing. you want your child to attend a school where there is open prayer, bully for you that is great ,go build a school and maintain it in god's name. but prayer, bible study etc, etc has no place in a public school.

Greg is right, there is one; no need nor should we ever have a national fill in the blank ,Bible, Koran, Edda etc, etc anything, and two the Republicans have forgotten there base purpose and gone to far into trying to create a theocracy instead of conserving the republic

We are a Republic ,a land of laws, that are suppose to protect not the majority but all citizens.Your religion and beliefs are defined by not what you say or listen to but how you live and act.
