The down side of expediting

As a Newbie Expediter, I have recently discovered the down side of expediting. A couple years ago, my wife went with two of my daughters to London and Paris. She also went to the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas with another daughter another time. I couldn't get off either times because as a teacher, I had just come off of a spring/fall/summer/etc break. I don't particularly like to "vacation" anyway. I convinced my wife that expediting would be a good third career due to the fact I could work and not work when I wanted. Now, number two daughter wants us to go to Austria this fall. Granddaughter is going to a violin camp. I think I have shot myself in the foot. I have no excuse not to go. My wife never bought the story about my passport being a truckers "Canada only" passport. She said she isn't near as stupid as I thought her to be. I guess it's off to Austria come August, or whenever. Hate to be so long winded, but someone needs to let other Wannabees or Newbies that not everything they hear about expediting is all that rosy. Hey, maybe I'll see some kangaroos in Austria.

FEDEXCC runs their European operations out of Brussels Belgium. Perhaps you could hook up with them and run Expedite within Europe while the ladies spend your hard earned money.

RE: The down side of expediting

I went to Europe for 3 weeks in September and turned control of my 5 trucks over to one of my old buddies who is on the road with Willie(the singer with long hair)He did a fine job.In fact, the trucks made more money while I was gone then when I'm home!!Planning another trip this summer!!Plus, the drivers got back stage pass's when paths crossed on the road.Made the drivers happy too.A real win win!!
Good luck.By the way,the Austrian roo's live in ice caves and only come out at night,so you have to be quick with the camera.

I'm sure TheOldProf is a lot quicker with the camera than the boomerang...(send pictures of Aborigines, if you get any!):+
BTW, TallCall - my aunt yelled at me for having Willie singing "On the road again" on my answering machine - she said it IS NOT FUNNY! Some people just have no sense of fun...;)

There you have it, folks! Don't become an expediter. If you do, you might have to go to Austrailia or visit a violin camp.

Too funny!

RE: The down side of expediting

Bragging again...........
I handled the international moving needs of(at 1 time)the largest mining company in OZ(as the locals refer to it)BHP Minerals(now defunct)
I travled to OZ every year for 15 years.Saw the ENTIRE country(Perth is my favorite, followed by Port Douglas,on the great Barrier Reef). The best part was I got paid to go.Brag #2..I was the biggest booker in Australia,a limited moving market, and the movers all had to kiss my a**. I controlled 50% of the entire market and gave out the origin and destination work to whom I choose. They hated me,but had to act like they loved me.Never paid for a meal, watched alot of rugby and OZ rules football.Lots of OZ beer(not Fosters by the way).VB!!(Victoria Bitters)
I had more fun then should be legally allowed.I miss those days, but had a large time down under.
The moving business has taken me to over 25 countries, including very remote parts of the world(including Timbuktu in Mali,West Africa)where BHP mined gold out of dry scorched earth.
Anybody interested in road stories, you can pick up my book next year,I'm publishing myself.Hangin' out with the headhunters in Irian Jaya is a chapter not to be missed.

It sounds to me like you should just stop working and enjoy some of the money your family spends on travel. My Lord they get around.

I am with you though, if my truck does not take me there or there is not a race there, I don't go. I hate vacationing. I will say that last year I was dating a very young woman who wanted to travel and if I could have kept her interest, I would be on a trip right now to be sure. Not for the trip but.... well I think you get my point.

When #2 daughter, the mother of the fiddle player, was in high school, she spent the summer in Salzburg, Austria. Her host's father was some way involved with the Salzburg festival. She got to attend the dress rehersal for the festival. The Salzburg festival is to opera lovers what the Indy 500, Superbowl, and the World Series are to sports fans. :+ :+
