would it be better to talk with companies, that is if you are serious about getting into expediting or have a rig and then talk.The reason i ask is some of the companies i have talked with so far, is one of there first question was do you already have a rig and if not, they want to send you to someone to make a purchase.Did most of you guy's with experience already own a rig before you started talking, are did the companies convince you that this was the business you needed to get into if you wanted to be a successful business person in the trucking industry.

If you are completely new to the industry you should talk first.Buying a truck is a major investment and if you find that this expediting industry is not for you,then you will not take a hit in disposing of a truck.
The archives are full of advice for new and potential drivers,one common thread is that you should drive for a fleet owner to get experience and see if this lifestyle is for you. Talk to the companies that you are interested in and then ask the recruiter about fleet owners that might hire you.You didn't say if you had any otr experience or a CDL,they are musthaves to get started,clean driving record,no felonys and able to pass a drug test are also musthaves.

Yes i have a few years driving and owning a peterbuilt with my own flatbed trailer, use to run part time while i worked my regular day job as a building operating engineer.my cdl is still current and a up to date medical card.i sold the flatbed operation last year when the fuel prices went out of control and they were still paying the same for deliveries.

RichM has some good advise above. Talk to the companies that you are interested in and from that point determine what kind of employment with a owner you want, or what type of truck you want to put on with a prospective company.

Definitely do all your homework before you put the cash down for a truck. Expediting isn't just a job, it is a lifestyle. Many including myself find it to be a rewarding experience, and a great way to make your living - but like anything else, it's not for everyone. In your research process find a company that you feel comfortable with. It is possible that they can help you find a ride in an owner's truck, or at least help steer you in the direction of which trucks do the best within their system. ask any and every question that may concern you (no matter how small). Getting into expediting is a big step, and it's not as simple as driving around the country and seeing sights. Good preparation and understanding of the industry is a must to get your new career off to a positive start.
