Re: memphis area
There are a few places to sit in the area. None are very fun if you ask me. I grew up in the area. You can go to the Wolfchase Galleria Mall which is east of Memphis on I-40 on Germantown Parkway. You should be able to park a big truck over there. There are to many eating places within walking distance to list. Plus a movie theatre inside. I'm thinking it's exit 16A off of I 40. You can't miss it. The only thing a truck stop has over this place is showers and fuel. I know we used to take our big greyhound looking bus from church there when I was in high school, but I know that doesn't mean anything.

Re: memphis area
We stay at the "J" in Olive Branch. It seems to be a bit cleaner and much safer than the truck stops in West Memphis. We have been "bothered" by all kinds of riffraff in West Memphis, no problems (yet) at Olive Branch. Layoutshooter

Re: memphis area
There are quite a few places around. I suggested the Mall mainly for the husband and wife teams amongst us. You can go have dinner and a movie and really enjoy yourslef. Plus they some things around there you just can't get at a Flying J or Petro.

Re: memphis area
stayed at the j in wm couple weks back. talked to the on duty plice man who said(inbetween dips and spits) that they took a no tolerance policy there. he said they regulary arrest pmps and pushers and of course they are back on the street in no time. some times they just leave with the word of advice. this conversation came up as i shared a table with another driver in a t/t who said o no this place is safe and started the conversation with the cop.
cop also said when they arrest the p & p guys they get calls from auntie and granmama about the diposition of her car. he said just stay off the cb and you don't hear the chatter.
thats my west mem moment.

Re: memphis area
last time I was in West Memphis I was a witness to a murder at the Petro. This guy was working for an older man doing drivers tanks and he stabbed him to death and took the old man money. The police caught him and I was able to help put him in jail.

Re: memphis area
I worked over by the Petro for a year from 2pm until 10pm or midnight 6 days a week and I didn't have near the trouble everyone here complains of. Heck, the truck stop area isn't even the "hood" in West Memphis. That's south of Broadway. I used to deliver pizza down there. I only had one problem down there. I had a guy come up behind me and say "break yo self fool" for those of you that don't know that means drop your cash. Luckily I had my pickup door open so I slid my 12 gauge from behind the seat and pumped that Remington model 870 express and all the sudden he thought I was his cousin at first and was just joking. Yeah right.

Re: memphis area
The J in Olive Branch is pretty good, and a good Wally World is only a couple miles up from it. Whenever I get in that area I go right there

Re: memphis area
Been to Memphis many times, use to sing the song " walking in Memphis " to myself only use " sitting in Memphis " as word replacement. I personally like Memphis but have a story to tell also, walked into bathroom at Amoco and grabbed doorknob, yuk it was wet, after going on in realized my hand had blood on it and the bathroom was covered with blood and bloody paper towels. I mean someone had a serious problem and was trying to clean up, ran out of there quick. I found that there is plenty of places to be wary of out there in the "fun" world of otr. Rest stops probably being near the top of the list. I think some people on here tend to play down the real world of being out there day in day out and the dangers that you have to be prepared for.
