Looking into Buying a Digital Camera

To all you photo buffs out there, I need some advice on what to look for on purchasing a digital camera. Never had one, know nothing about them.

I still have a 35mm with a 70/300 zoom. I still love the camera I have but there are times I wish I had a digital, for those instant pictures to email.

I know the digital's have the zoom but are there any that would match the one I have?

Which do you prefer and why?

Any info would be great!

RE: Looking into Buying a Digital Camera

Arlene I just recently (1 year) got bit by the the DIG bug..
I am really bad at it but love taking photos 5k later.
I recommend the Canon 400D known as the XTI.
If you are a photog lover from the film era you will love the features and benefits of the Dig in the XTI.
Here are some links to some old galleries with the XT and XTI.
Again I suck at this but I love it!

FYI a good crop digital cam will cost you 8 dead presidents b-4 lenses so you have to want it bad but if you ask me it is worth every penny.
Do share what you do...

RE: Looking into Buying a Digital Camera

Mike,

Great pictures!!!

You took all of these with the Canon 400D? If so, this may be the camera for me!!

I just love taking pictures-even though I am not very good at it. I will take pictures of everything and nothing and go no where with out my camera.

I am definitely going to look into this camera.

Thanks for the info.

Mike, and Arlene, and anyone else who photographs cool and pretty things: thanks! Please keep it up - on a day like today, when it's raining in Oregon, (surprise! huh?) it sure is welcome. :)

My youngest daughter got a Cannon 8 or 10 mega pix. She took some pics of her dog and you could see every single hair on that rascal. I don't know cameras from CB's but hers takes the picture very quickley and stll gets the next shot ready. I guess that means something to someone who takes more pictures than the two per year that I take. I think hers was 8 dead guys also not counting the lens and stuff.

I've heard time and time again, and seen first hand that Canon makes the best digi cams. I have a 2MP Canon A60 that i think takes better pictures then some of these higher MP other brand cameras.

My vote thats seems to go with everyone else is Canon.

I really don't worry much about the price - if the pictures are quality pictures.

I checked on the web about the Canon 400D and did not think that was a bad price. Of course, I will get the package with the zoom. If it holds up like my 35mm, it will be well worth the money!

Arlene you might try looking at the Canon forums http://photography-on-the.net/forum/index.php if considering a Canon. Also try P-Base http://www.pbase.com/ where you can do a search of pictures taken with every camera produced and every lens for the camera of choice.
My brother Mr sibling rivalry called me today to let me know he just ordered a MK-III from Canon for $4800 (camera body only) and he doesn't even enjoy photography..
I feel better cause he dropped a 70-200 f2.8 L glass lens today worth about $1800 and made an ashtray out of it..
Point is you can spend a lot of jack on your passion, do your research and purchase wisely.
As for me with a 350D and a 400D I have 5k invested in lenses and accessories but the joy I get could not be bought for any amount..
