    Year over Year Comparison

From Jan 1 to May 19 2009 this is a surface D unit team

    In Service 89.8, 40 runs

    Approximate Mileage

    Total 25,544
    Loaded 18,189
    Avg per Run 781

    Revenue

    Total $38,879.68
Avg per Loaded Mile $ 1.42
    Avg per Mile $ 1.01

    Jan 1 to May 19 2008

    In Service 85%, 58 runs

    Total 51,637
    Loaded 42,758
    Avg per Run 845

    Revenue

    Total $75,354.53
Avg per Loaded Mile $ 1.68
    Avg per Mile $ 1.39

I suppose most of the per mile drop has been due to fuel prices. However our run count is down by 32%, which is like having taken a full month off, except we didn't.

Wow can you Imagine a 37K cut in revenue. No wonder I,ve been so grumpy and on edge.

This may be better than some of you worse than others but I thought Id let u see the real numbers.

Thanks! Seeing the real numbers instead of just hearing people say its bad makes a difference. I have been thinking of buying a straight truck before the end of the yr....i'll continue to "think" about it and watch the trends before i do it....

    Again Thanks.....

I thought this thread would have seen much more activity by now. Good, hard data to review. Let's see what happens.

    Re: Year over Year Comparison

Ok, I just went on the extranet and dug up my figures also.
First the disclaimers, last year I ran solo the first half of the year, only on the west coast and went home after most loads, due to my mother's terminal illness. (she passed away in April). So that makes for my significant d/h miles. My unit is a 99 KW T-300 with reefer and liftgate which I purchased for $41,000 in 2004. I am White Glove but not T-Val or DOD clearance. This year's numbers are as a team, still mostly west coast but I have taken three loads to the east and midwest. I also took a two week vacation to Hawaii in January which cut my numbers for this year.

    2008 Jan 1 to May 19
    63 runs
    93.76% in service
    Average loaded mile $3.17
    Average all miles $1.52
    Revenue $42,253.13

    2009 Jan 1 to May 19
    54 runs
    88.64% in service
    Average loaded mile $1.96
    average all miles $1.35
    Revenue $58,197.99

    Re: Year over Year Comparison

Easytrader I noticed that you stated that your wife left the truck and went home to take a job back in late February. Are you still running solo? I guess that will explain part of the mileage difference for same period last year?
I wondered how the fuel part of your expenses averaged against revenue, between the 2 years.
Also, I'm wondering... if you take into consideration the lost revenue by running solo compared to team, and compare it to the wages now earned by your wife instead, which model turns out better financially for you, overall? ie, you may be getting less miles, less loads, less revenue, but fuel is less and your wife earns straight take-home pay now, (less whatever expenses go with it.. (ie maybe you now need a car, gas, insurance, parking, etc? where perhaps you did not need that car before, etc.).

In other words, just wondering if you are finding your decision for your wife to leave the truck and get a job instead, is paying off for you overall, all things considered.

    Re: Year over Year Comparison

the wife was onl out of the truck for two weeks unemployment in california is over 11 percent evry job she applied for had hundreds of applications. So needless to say
shes back in the truck and bussiness still sucks.

our expenses have come down some I rarely if ever drive over 60mph which has brought my fuel milage from 8 to 9.5 it has also caused us to be late to pickup a few times. Something i never would have done last year.

I also used to wash the truck once a week. Now Ive washed it once all year. If we have fast food its off the value menu. But mostly we live off cereal and hotdogs. Before we used to catch the J salad bar three times a week; no more. I also added a byass filter on the truck which should cut oil expense by 90 percent or so but it wont be untill next year for the cost to recoup.

anyway it really sucks having a 2k
truck payment. If Yellow roadway shuuts its doors well all be fine but if they some how survive I suppose were screwed. There is still to much capacity. As rates do not reflect finacial reality.

The fact is after business expenses. we can pay mortage health ins and my car payment. Plus three hundre a month for groceries. Thats about 1700 a month inpersonal expenses. So basically we make less than minimum wage. Which incidently I have never done not even in youth
    jobs.

    LOL

If the gov bails out yellow roadway
    Ill be pretty miffed.

The only goodss news is I was able to dodge the stock market crash and even playyed it on the short side with our retirement funds. Caught the bottom right on and reversed. However having said that our retirement acount is ridicously small so other than a little ego boost for market timing in reality it means little to our present situation.

Crap now my good mood is ruined.

I was just thinking the same thing yesterday, I'm 39 and have never really had a problem earning pretty good money, but it sure is different now, all I hope for is that they are right when they say 2010 makes the turn for us.

where do you people work making 100k you can stay out for a weeks and only do $150 if im lucky you at nei i have i was told that i would make what your sayinging but the reality is recruiters lie dispatchers lie these companies are bringing in all these trucks and cant run the ones they have which shows how much they care about you as a driver and you being able to make a decent living and there character, the truth is, people at mcdonalds make more when you add in your time spent involed in everything if you are making money your not at nations express. if you are really doing that amount of money you need to wake up and thank god for your company, oportunity and thank god agian that your not in a situation like some of us. good luck to you all drivers, and be safe out there, god bless

you're right you must be crazy, FDECC can't get you any better miles than that? I don't see how anyone could live off of that, but if you enjoy what your doing, what hay!

I will be more than miffed! But I suspect it will be for reasons other than yours.

You mean that the remedy to a drop in revenue ISN'T to start showing up late in a filthy truck? I'll be darned.

The opposite is equally true, as well.

Really, though, I like your logic. Those that put cheap miles on their truck while providing poor expedite service will be weeded out first, and desevedly so. Keep up it up!
