Strange or Odd Deliveries
What has been one of your strangest or odd deliveries you've done?
Just reading some post and getting a laugh today, but was curious about others strange calls.
I had one last fall where the unit was supposed to fit through the front door (I was at the back door). Unfortunately some one made the unit a hair (literally a hair) too big. So we tried the back and again too big. The contractor working there and myself took out a 4x8 section of the back wall of the building to have a space big enough to get the unit in the building. We then rebuilt the wall using plywood (no drywall handy, or bricks etc).
Not in my job description to do this but you have to get your load delivered.
This load followed one that I refused to cover with insurance as it wasn't packed correctly, I also refused to be responsible for breakage no matter how caused. Really was an unusual day.

RE: Strange or Odd Deliveries
Right after the Chicago White Sox won the world series I delivered 10000 oversized Louisville Slugger baseball bats to a small company in northern Massachusetts so he could laser the team logo and players names on the bats and sell them as series souvenirs.
I delivered 1000 orange cones to Miami Florida to be used as path guides for applicants applying for aid after the last huuricane.

RE: Strange or Odd Deliveries
Once picked up four hand made, hand engraved, walnut caskets valued at 30k-60k each, in New Hampshire, and delivered them to an Undertaker show/convention in Las Vegas.
Nuther time I picked up four skids of electrical fixtures in Charlotte, hauled them to Laredo, unloaded, then after the skids were inspected, loaded the same ones up, and hauled them back to the origination. Customer was road testing their packaging for transport of their product. We do this quite often for different customers.
We have completed many moves that were unusual, sensitive, fragile or secretive, that, suffice to say, won't be mentioned on this forum.

Handed a one #10 envelope with one single 2 1/2" X 6" piece of paper in it.
Not even a hello or how you doing and dropped it off with the same response the next day.
Very twilight zonish.
Paid very very good by the way.

RE: Strange or Odd Deliveries
Jim and col you guys only picked up caskets?? I did the oposite, I got the bodies and no caskets (body bags). Had to deliver first thing next morning.
ALso had customer who used to deal in body parts (for research), we had a driver slam his brakes on and the cooler slamed into the dog house in his van. Of course it popped open and he saw the contents. He ran and left the van in the middle of the road (running). I had to go get it and fix it (the delivery of course).
Originally though I thought to leave those out of the discussion, oh well.

RE: Strange or Odd Deliveries
nice Greg. Had one that the lady at the builders gave me an envelope (9x12) for the city hall in another town, did the delivery and then dispatch made me go back to the builders office and do it again.
The lady was in such a hurry she gave the labelled envelope, no contents, she forgot to stuff the envelope. She was so embarrased she wanted the same driver to do the run again as I knew where to go and of course fewer people would know of her mistake.

RE: Strange or Odd Deliveries
One of my last loads was to deliver two rolls of bar coded shipping labels about 250 miles. They weren't in a box or anything. When I stopped for lunch I asked for an extra McDonald's sack. When I went to the cons I went in with a Mickey D sack.

RE: Strange or Odd Deliveries
Well let's see:
I've delivered van loads of live rabbits (two to a catton, with dividers and trix), pig eyes for retina transplants, as well as eel tails for artery transplants. The weirdest one was Garden Grove, CA to San Diego Pet Cemetary. Load was a 48x48 bouquet of flowers and wreath to be placed on a dead horse's grave.

I know a D unit team here on EO that hauled a dozen human cadavers to Universities across the country with the refrigerated unit.
Can you imagine a long, hot layover with that cargo?

RE: Strange or Odd Deliveries
We picked up at place in Ohio where they made cages...we picked up 2 of them going to the AA Arena in Dallas for WWE wrestling matches to be held the next night...turned out they were used by Hulk Hogan to put Vince McMahon in after a match. That might not be as strange...or disturbing as cadavers but still the delivery was interesting down in the catacombs of the arena.
We also drove right up to a Boeing 737 that had just unloaded it's passengers to deliver a large radar nose cone. the guy was soooo thankful we were there waiting on the plane that he gave us some goodies and a complete tour of the airplane.
