FDCC New Crossing Empty Procedure
New VRU Option When Deadheading Back to U.S. Empty
When returning to the U.S. empty, you will now use the VRU to create the ACE/eManifest. This new option only applies if you are deadheading back to the U.S. FedEx Custom Critical will continue to send the manifest automatically if you are on a live load.
The ACE/eManifest coversheet is required when crossing into the U.S. either loaded or empty.
To access this new menu option on the VRU, choose Option 1 for Dispatch then go to Option 7, βTo enter port for crossing the border.β You must enter the numeric port code for where you are crossing. For example, Detroit is Port Code 3801. You must then enter the time you will cross at that port in military time. Our system will then submit the manifest to U.S. Customs. If you have any questions, please contact a facilitator.

This new procedure will require the use of a telephone while in Canada. I always deactivate my phone when entering Canda because the Canadian charges on top of my carrier's (ATT) charges for OUTCONUS use is excessive. Does anyone regularly use their USA cell in Canada and be willing to share the costs of so doing?

RE: FDCC New Crossing Empty Procedure
Terry,
It seems I end up spending on the last trip into and out of Canada for phone calls $4.00. This includes the calls I make to my wife - 2 calls and the one to FedEx to setup the ACE. I try to explain to my wife not to call me if I am in Canada but she sometimes has to tell me some thing and calls.
I know that if I am visiting friends on the lake in the Points and I am on their deck on the river, I end up with Rodgers as my carrier, bouncing off the river. I found this out when I got a bill for $60 for one call.

The ATT costs I mentioned were expensive, but not excessive. It was the Canadian tariffs I received on a subsequent bill that shocked me. As I recall, a short call was in excess of $20.

RE: FDCC New Crossing Empty Procedure
Verizon seems to carry some distance into Canada in relationship to the lake and major citys...Like you can be 10 miles out before Verizon changes to a Can carrier . In Windsor I'd make all my calls from the McD's there on the corner and from the duty free in Sarnia.
But the payphone was the best bet.
Does Fedex not have a 1-800 number to call into?

RE: FDCC New Crossing Empty Procedure
You all had me worried but I just called customs at Port Huron where I cross and manifests for empty returns aren't required there . Here is a link to contact a Port of Entry . http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/toolbox/contacts/ports/
