Anyone Turned Back For Paperwork Not Being Cleared

Has anyone been made to go back to Canada because your paperwork was not cleared?

When did this change come about anyway?

We picked up a load 15 minutes from the Border,called the broker to see how long it would take to get the paperwork cleared. Had the shipper fax paperwork, got the confirmation and headed for the Border. We figured we would pull off at the Duty Free and wait the 2 hrs for the paperwork to clear. On our way to the Border I called the broker and was told they never received the fax. Being that close to the Border, there is no truck stop, stopped at the Duty Free but they do not have a fax so we decided we would get in line and just go to the broker's.

After sitting in line for 2 hrs, we finally got up to the booth and explained our situation so he told us to go see our broker. When we went into the broker's it was no big deal. They entered our paperwork and sent us over to customs. While we were at the brokers, they received a call and I could hear them telling the person on the other end - no, we did not receive any paperwork from you.

When we went to Customs, we were told that we should not have been sent to the broker or customs but turned around and sent back into Canada to start all over again. We were asked who told us to go see our broker. We told them the gentleman in the booth and we explained our situation and how I over heard them in the office telling the person on the phone how they did not receive their paperwork either. After all that they did stamp our paperwork.

I told my husband, the next time we are that close to the border, we will sit and wait the 15 minutes to call the broker and see if they received the fax!!

Did you read my Primer on PARS?
2-1/2 MINIMUM for the PARS in Customs.
There are so many variables; it's very hard to say.
You don't state which border...Detroit; Port Huron Buffalo, Niagara Falls etc.
If the goods were automotive; they might have qualified for CSA/FAST clearance.

Of course; I an assuming you were entering Canada from the US; if you were going the other way all your papers must be accepted before you cross.


You should contact your carrier for assistance too.

This situation is one I was hoping to help someone avoid, when I posted just 12 hrs prior to the first post here - it's a shame they hadn't a chance to read it. To reiterate: always call the broker BEFORE leaving the shipper, to ensure paperwork was received, and is correct. Waiting the few minutes to make that phone call is a lot better than the delay at customs, and hours of waiting in multiple lines.

Sorry I wasn't more clear. We were coming from CN into US through Detroit. And I called the broker to see how long it would take to clear before sending the paperwork.
Luckily, we were not turned back to CN but we were told we should have been. When did this all change? We were never told this before when our paperwork did not clear.(it does not happen often) We have been running in and out of CN for 2 1/2 yrs.
Of course, we have learned a valuable lesson: sit at the shippers until we know that the broker received the paperwork! Never had that problem before that a broker did not receive paperwork but I guess there is always a 1st time for everything!
It seems each time we take a load out of CN, there is always one problem or another!:(

WHAT? The broker told you that you should have been sent back, what is their job then? I think that the only one who should suggest this is the guy/gal in the booth that has the power, not the broker.

Unless there is a real reason for me to travel back into Canada, like the wrong product on my truck, I don't see a reason for me to move until the shipper and the broker get it all straight - they have phones and fax machines and the broker is paid to make sure that this is all correct and collect the duties. Beside how will you get out of the compound without custom's permission and what will you say when you get on the other side? that puts you in a position that is not really good by you now dealing with the custody of the load beyond what you were hired to do.

I had this problem once on inbound freight (going into the US) and went to the broker who did everything as I stood there - it was a big mess to begin with.

I also have had this problem a few times with outbound freight (going into Canada). Everyone one of these problems were fixed within minutes at the broker (except my first experience) and I always got a confirmation number from Customs to move to the border.

As I understand the post, it was the customs officer (after he left the broker) who said he should have been sent back by the first customs officer he dealt with before going to the broker.

We have also been told that if coming into the United States and your paperwork has not cleared you will be sent back to the customer not the broker by the customs official.

I believe that this is the A.C.E. program.
It is another Post 911 change at the US border. The rationelle is to keep the border from being plugged with trucks.

we were in mich about 15 min from the border i called dispatch to see if we needed to the pars or not was told from them i didnt have to seeing how we were so close.cause it takes like 2 hours for them to do pars.
we get there find our broker its brokered through them with another broker they called the lady noone calls her back we had to stay there the whole night mean time these 2 wonderful ladies were so helpful they kept paging this person all night for us
finally about 9 or 10 are paperwork was finally okayed
so we decicded for now on no matter how close we are we do the pars and save ourselves the hassle
and then the first time we crossed they said our pars wasnt ready so we had to stay there again at a different crossin and the next morning the guy was like how come u stayed here all night it was already ready

TeamCaffee, you don't have to return to the shipper, just go back to Canada. You should be able to fix the problem over the phone.

After reading about what all you people are going thru with these crossings no one has even mentioned your dispatch!

Does not your dispatch do anything?

Our company, we fax the paperwork to them and THEY fax it to the right broker and confirm reception and then check what time we can cross and get release numbers and all. We do not approach the crossing till dispatch gives us the green light.
If theres a problem that I didn't see on the original paperwork they can get them fixed while on route.....This is why we pay them!
I've seen so many drivers literally stranded by there dispatch, I find this completely unprofessional and reflects badly on any company that does not back up thier drivers.

What do our dispatchers do - they give us the name of the broker and half the time that info is not right either! But we have learned to call and verify that the Broker handles the load we are getting, what # to fax it to and to verify that they have received the fax. Now we have also learned that when load 15 minutes from the Border, to sit and wait at the shipper's to verify Broker received the fax.
It usually only takes one screw up for us to learn!! :+ :+

We have sat at the border for days, turned back to Canada, given wrong fax numbers, and my husband was almost arrested coming into the states because they mistakend him for someone who was wanted. We love crossing the border! ha ha ha.
