One of the largest sports related riots ever was after one of Iran's World Cup qualifying matches in 2001 when more than 1000 people were arrested, more than 200 injured and unknown number of dead. A close second was one in 2007 when a soccer match in Italy resulted in the police commissioner dead, 70 injured and nearly 1000 arrested.
At least the one in Iran started out as a sports riot, but evolved into a political protest. The one in Italy, well, they were just stupid fans fighting fans of the opposing team. That one devolved.
