Driver Lifestyles

Meet Mr. Main Event
May 14, 2007
Expediter Doug Schell has had an interesting life, so far.

In addition to his work history as a roofer, work in a tool and machine shop and driver on an ice cream route, this forty-year old drove a straight truck and cargo van for a Toledo-based cartage company before entering the expedite world in 1997.

And, did we mention that he's also a professional wrestler?

Schell, who competes under the name of "Mr. Main Event", tells us that when he's found something that works, he sticks with it.

What Keeps You in Expedited Trucking?
May 5, 2007
In the business of expedite, just as in the "business" of life, it's easy to lose focus of the bigger picture.

When you're confronted on a daily basis with periods of no or slow freight, ever-increasing fuel prices and the cost of doing business, bad weather, traffic congestion, an irritating dispatcher and a plethora of other problems, you scratch your head and wonder, "Why am I doing this?"

Maybe that's the time to take a deep breath and consider the "benefits" of your occupation - the good things about the business that don't make it on to a balance sheet.

A Driver's Best Friend
Apr 24, 2007
Imagine a world without coffee.

A world without that rich, aromatic brew that provides comfort and stimulates the mind. Or, as one coffee lover puts it, "it takes the edge off of the morning."

A world without the beverage that, for many of us, makes it possible to shake off the hangover of the previous night's sleep and to begin our day.

A world without coffee. A frightening image, right?

Trends in Expedited Truck Sleepers
Apr 12, 2007
Jon Mosier of Freightliner of Knoxville, TN says, "One of the changes that we've seen in the industry is the amount of research that we do before we introduce a new sleeper. We want to be sure that we are building the units according to what the customer desires."

"We work very closely with our sleeper manufacturer, Bentz
Transport Products of Ft. Wayne, IN. They have a long-standing reputation of being very customer-oriented and when we communicate our needs to them, they produce what we asked for."

Meet Greg Geronsin
Mar 23, 2007
Geronsin tells us of the differences in expedite vs. general trucking: "In expedite, the freight is different. First, it always has to be on time and so the business is faster-paced - I like that. Another nice difference is, the customers are happy to see you - they want what you have on your truck. It's not like the grocery warehouses when I was driving big truck."

"If I had my wife to run team with, I would be in a straight truck, but she has a career of her own and she has no interest in driving a truck. She doesn't even want to drive my pickup. She rode with me a few times in the big truck, but she would never, ever drive for a living."

My Favorite Layover Places
Mar 12, 2007
"My favorite layover places".

That could take in a number of cities, but for most expediters it means the area out of which they find the most loads. And, for most expediters, a favorite city will be the one where they are pre-dispatched and have a load waiting for them before they even hit the city limits.

But, as we all know, those cities are somewhat of a rarity, and there's usually some waiting time involved. This gives the expediter(s) some time to wander and visit the area they're in.

The Nightime Thief
Feb 22, 2007
During the apneic event, the person is unable to breathe in oxygen and to exhale carbon dioxide, resulting in low levels of oxygen and increased levels of carbon dioxide in the blood.

The reduction in oxygen and increase in carbon dioxide alert the brain to resume breathing and cause an arousal.

Expedite Trucking Lessons I've learned
Feb 19, 2007
I had never considered driving professionally before, but I got my CDL, and began my career in the expediting business.

After six months with that owner, I purchased the truck I had been driving, and after convincing my wife to hit the road with me, she got her CDL, qualified with the company and we began running team.

Women Owner-Operators of Expedited Trucking
Jan 19, 2007
Lady truckers have come to be regarded as a positive force in the trucking world. They receive high marks from the expedited carriers with whom they are leased as being professional, conscientious businesspeople who are serious about their profession.

The female owner-operators speak of a desire for personal freedom and a quest for adventure: "I love to drive and I've always wanted to see the country."

Sleepy Expediter?
Jan 16, 2007
It's a common and all-too-typical expediter tale.

You pulled into the truck stop lot last night after your delivery and you've been sitting there all of today waiting for freight. It's after 6:00 pm when you finally get the next load, but it doesn't pick up until 11:30 that evening.

Unfortunately, a nap before heading out is out of the question because it's 100 miles to the pickup and you've got to go.
